Privacy Policy

Satomo is built and operated by Rambutan LLC ("Rambutan," "we," "us," or "our"). This Privacy Policy explains how information is handled when you use the Satomo iOS app, visit satomo.app, or contact us for support.

Our Approach

Satomo is designed to provide local safety context with minimal data collection. The app does not require an account, does not include third-party advertising SDKs, and does not sell personal information. The crime database used for Satomo's safety scores is bundled with the app, so core crime-data lookups are performed on your device.

Some features rely on Apple-provided system services, such as Location Services, notifications, MapKit, local storage, and the Mail composer. Those services may process information according to Apple's own terms and privacy policies.

Information Processed in the App

Location. If you allow location access, Satomo uses your device location to identify the city or area around you and compare it with the bundled crime data. For foreground use, Satomo requests a location fix when needed for the Here and Map views. If you enable optional alerts and grant Always location permission, Satomo uses iOS significant-location-change monitoring to check whether an alert should be shown when your area changes.

Map and search requests. Satomo uses Apple MapKit, local search, and reverse geocoding to display maps, search for places, and turn a location into a human-readable place name. Search terms, map interactions, or location lookups may be processed by Apple as part of providing those services.

Settings and app state. Satomo stores app preferences on your device, such as onboarding state, whether alerts are enabled, your alert threshold, alert cooldown, and whether you skipped or requested certain permissions.

Alert records and ignored cities. If alerts are enabled, Satomo may store notification history on your device. A notification record can include the alert time, city, state, safety score, threshold, delivery status, and the location coordinate associated with the alert. If you ignore or mute a city, Satomo stores that city identifier on your device so future alerts for that area can be suppressed.

Notifications. Satomo schedules local notifications through iOS. Notification content may include a city, state, and safety score. Tapping a notification can open Satomo to the related city detail screen.

Information You Send Us

If you email us at hello@satomo.app, we receive the information you choose to include, such as your email address, message, and any attachments.

If you use an in-app coverage request email, the draft may include an approximate location so we can understand the request. For outside-U.S. coverage requests, Satomo may include country, region, and coordinates rounded to about two decimal places. For U.S. no-coverage requests, Satomo is designed to include city and state rather than coordinates. You can edit or delete the email before sending it.

Website Information

The Satomo website is a static site. It does not currently use advertising cookies or third-party analytics scripts. Our hosting providers may process ordinary technical information, such as IP address, browser type, device information, referring page, and timestamps, to deliver the website, maintain security, and operate their services.

How We Use Information

We use information to operate Satomo, show local safety context, provide optional alerts, save your preferences, respond to support and coverage requests, improve reliability, protect against misuse, comply with law, and maintain the app and website.

How Information Is Shared

We do not sell personal information, and we do not share personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising. We may share information with service providers that help us operate Satomo, such as website hosting and email providers; with Apple or Apple-provided services when you use iOS, MapKit, notifications, or the App Store; if required by law or valid legal process; or as part of a business transfer such as a merger, acquisition, reorganization, or sale of assets.

Retention

Information stored by the app on your device generally remains there until you delete the app, clear the relevant setting, or remove the relevant item if Satomo provides an in-app control for doing so. Emails and support communications are retained for as long as reasonably needed to respond, maintain records, improve Satomo, and comply with legal obligations.

Your Choices

You can grant, deny, or revoke location and notification permissions in iOS Settings. If you revoke location permission, Satomo clears cached location fields when it receives the permission change, though some local records created before revocation may remain on your device until removed or the app is deleted.

You can choose whether to send us email, what to include in that email, and whether to enable optional alerts. You can also contact us to request access, correction, deletion, or other privacy help for information we have received directly from you.

Privacy Rights

Depending on where you live, you may have rights to request access to, correction of, deletion of, or a copy of personal information we hold about you, or to object to or restrict certain processing. You may also have the right to opt out of certain sales or sharing of personal information. Satomo does not sell personal information or share it for cross-context behavioral advertising.

To make a privacy request, email hello@satomo.app. We may need enough information to verify and process your request. We will not discriminate against you for exercising privacy rights that apply to you.

Children

Satomo is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has sent personal information to us, contact us and we will take appropriate steps to delete it.

Security

We use reasonable administrative, technical, and organizational measures to protect information we handle. No app, website, device, or transmission method can be guaranteed to be completely secure.

International Use

Rambutan LLC is based in the United States. If you contact us from outside the United States, your information may be processed in the United States or other places where our service providers operate.

Changes

We may update this Privacy Policy as Satomo changes or as legal, technical, or business needs evolve. When we do, we will update the effective date above. Your continued use of Satomo after the updated policy is posted means the updated policy applies going forward.
