Terms of Service

These Terms of Service ("Terms") apply to the Satomo iOS app, the website at satomo.app, and related support services (together, "Satomo"). Satomo is built and operated by Rambutan LLC ("Rambutan," "we," "us," or "our"). By accessing or using Satomo, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use Satomo.

Important Safety Notice

Satomo provides general informational context only. Satomo is not an emergency response system, law enforcement service, security service, travel advisory, legal service, or personal safety plan. Satomo does not monitor you continuously, does not guarantee that a place is safe or unsafe, and does not replace your own judgment, local conditions, official warnings, or emergency services.

If you believe you or someone else may be in danger, call 911 or your local emergency number immediately. Do not wait for Satomo, rely on Satomo, or use Satomo as your only source of safety information.

What Satomo Does

Satomo helps people understand how a place compares with average United States city crime rates. The app may show violent crime rates, property crime rates, a comparison against national city averages, a simplified safety score, a map view, and optional location-based alerts when an area appears below a threshold you choose.

Satomo's current app data set is built from public FBI Uniform Crime Reporting data, including Return A and Arson data, processed into a local database bundled with the app. Satomo may change its data sources, calculations, features, and coverage over time.

Data and Score Limitations

Crime data has real limits. FBI UCR data is voluntarily submitted by law enforcement agencies, reflects reported incidents rather than all crime, can be delayed, and can vary by jurisdiction because of local reporting practices, agency participation, population changes, geography, policing practices, and other local factors. Some areas may have no data, incomplete data, older data, or boundary matches that do not perfectly reflect where you are standing.

Satomo's scores, classifications, comparisons, colors, map regions, and alerts are simplified calculations intended to provide context. They are not official rankings, predictions, guarantees, professional advice, or assessments of any law enforcement agency's performance. You should not use Satomo as the sole basis for decisions about personal safety, housing, employment, insurance, travel, business operations, law enforcement activity, or emergency response.

Location and Notifications

Some Satomo features require location permission, notification permission, or both. You can grant, deny, or revoke those permissions in iOS Settings at any time. If you do not grant the relevant permissions, some features may not work.

Optional alerts depend on your device, operating system, location services, notification settings, battery state, network conditions, and Satomo's data coverage. Alerts may be delayed, suppressed, inaccurate, unavailable, or not delivered. Satomo has no obligation to monitor your location or send an alert, and you should not rely on alerts to warn you about danger.

Eligibility

You must be at least 13 years old to use Satomo. If you use Satomo on behalf of an organization, you represent that you have authority to bind that organization to these Terms.

Your Responsibilities

You are responsible for how you use Satomo and for the decisions you make before, during, and after using it. You agree to use Satomo only for lawful purposes and in a way that does not harm, exploit, harass, stalk, threaten, defame, discriminate against, or target any person or group.

You agree not to use Satomo to make automated or high-impact decisions about people, to infer an individual's conduct from area-level data, to create unlawful surveillance, or to imply that Rambutan, Satomo, the FBI, Apple, or any public agency has endorsed your use of Satomo.

Acceptable Use

You agree not to interfere with Satomo, attempt to bypass security or access controls, scrape or harvest data from Satomo in a way that burdens the service, introduce malware, reverse engineer the app except where applicable law allows it, copy or redistribute the app, or use Satomo in violation of any law, regulation, third-party right, or app store rule.

License to Use the App

Subject to these Terms, Rambutan grants you a limited, personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to use Satomo on devices that you own or control for your own informational use. Satomo is licensed, not sold. Rambutan reserves all rights not expressly granted in these Terms.

Ownership

Satomo's software, design, text, graphics, branding, calculations, compilation, and other materials are owned by Rambutan or its licensors and are protected by intellectual property laws. Public data sources remain subject to their own terms, notices, and public records status. These Terms do not give you ownership of Satomo or any Rambutan intellectual property.

Feedback and Support Communications

If you send us feedback, suggestions, support requests, bug reports, or other communications, you grant Rambutan permission to use them to operate, support, improve, and promote Satomo without owing compensation to you. Do not send us information that you do not have the right to share.

Privacy

Our Privacy Policy explains how Satomo handles information. By using Satomo, you acknowledge that the Privacy Policy applies to your use of the app, website, and support channels.

Third-Party Services and Public Data

Satomo may depend on third-party platforms, operating systems, app stores, map providers, email providers, and public data sources. We do not control those third parties and are not responsible for their content, availability, data, terms, or policies. Satomo is not affiliated with or endorsed by the FBI, the United States Department of Justice, Apple, or any local, state, or federal law enforcement agency.

If you download Satomo through the Apple App Store, Apple's terms and policies also apply. Apple is not responsible for providing maintenance or support for Satomo. To the extent required by Apple's applicable terms, Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these Terms and may enforce the provisions that apply to your App Store download.

Changes to Satomo

We may add, change, suspend, or remove features, data sources, calculations, map coverage, alerts, website content, or support channels at any time. We may also stop offering Satomo or any part of it. We are not liable for any change, suspension, or discontinuation.

Changes to These Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. When we make changes, we will update the effective date above. Your continued use of Satomo after updated Terms become available means you accept the updated Terms.

Disclaimer of Warranties

To the fullest extent permitted by law, Satomo is provided "as is" and "as available" without warranties of any kind, whether express, implied, or statutory. Rambutan disclaims all warranties, including implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, availability, non-infringement, and quiet enjoyment.

We do not warrant that Satomo will be accurate, complete, current, uninterrupted, secure, error-free, available in any particular place, or suitable for your specific needs. Some jurisdictions do not allow certain warranty exclusions, so some of these exclusions may not apply to you.

Limitation of Liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, Rambutan and its owners, employees, contractors, agents, affiliates, and licensors will not be liable for indirect, incidental, consequential, special, exemplary, or punitive damages, or for lost profits, lost data, loss of goodwill, service interruption, personal decisions, missed alerts, unavailable data, inaccurate data, or actions taken in reliance on Satomo.

To the fullest extent permitted by law, Rambutan's total liability for any claim related to Satomo or these Terms will not exceed the greater of fifty dollars ($50) or the amount you paid Rambutan to use Satomo in the 12 months before the claim arose. These limits apply regardless of legal theory and even if a remedy fails of its essential purpose. Some jurisdictions do not allow certain limits of liability, so some of these limits may not apply to you.

Indemnity

To the extent permitted by law, you agree to defend, indemnify, and hold harmless Rambutan and its owners, employees, contractors, agents, affiliates, and licensors from claims, damages, liabilities, costs, and expenses arising from your misuse of Satomo, your violation of these Terms, your violation of law, or your violation of another person's rights.

Termination

You may stop using Satomo at any time. We may suspend or terminate your access to Satomo if we believe you have violated these Terms, created risk for Rambutan or others, or used Satomo unlawfully. Sections that by their nature should survive termination will survive, including ownership, disclaimers, limitations of liability, indemnity, and dispute-related provisions.

Governing Law

To the extent permitted by law, these Terms are governed by the laws applicable to Rambutan LLC in the United States, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. Nothing in these Terms limits mandatory consumer rights that cannot be waived under the laws where you live.
